The first polling stations in the midterm congressional elections have closed in the United States. The former president called on his supporters to protest.
“Protest, protest, protest,” former US President Donald Trump called his supporters on his own social network Truth Social on the day of the midterm elections in Congress, Tuesday, November 8.
According to Trump, many voters were told at polling stations that day that they had already voted. “Very bad” in this regard, Trump called the situation in Detroit, and also said that problems and “tremendous disruptions” are happening, according to his observations, in states where many Republican supporters live.
By 1:00 am CET, polls had closed in several US states. However, since the country is located in several time zones, the first vote results should not appear until dawn CET.
US mid-term elections
In the midterm elections in the US Congress, which began on November 8, the entire composition of the House of Representatives (435 seats) and a third of the Senate (35 seats out of a hundred) will be re-elected. In addition, new governors will be elected in 36 states.
If the majority is lost in even one of the chambers, it will be difficult for the US President, Democrat Joe Biden, to carry out his agenda.
As for Donald Trump, according to observers, the 76-year-old politician may take advantage of the success of the Republicans to announce his candidacy in the upcoming presidential election in the near future.
What do American voters think about the integrity of elections?
After the closing of the first polling stations, on the evening of November 8, several American media, including CNN, published the results of a poll with the participation of citizens who voted, commissioned by Edison Research.
According to this data, about 80% of US voters are “at least somewhat confident” that their state’s elections will be fair and that vote counts will be accurate.
About half of the respondents said they were “highly confident about it”. 20% of survey participants admitted that they had little or no confidence in the integrity of the election.
Meanwhile, 70% of those polled said they felt US democracy was “somewhat” or “a lot” under threat. Only about 30% expressed the opposite opinion.
At the same time, about a third of the participants in the survey noted that they consider the results of the 2020 presidential election, in which Joe Biden became President of the United States, to be illegitimate. About 60% of respondents said they considered the elections to be fair.
According to the Edison Research Institute, voters consider inflation, abortion, gun politics, crime and migration to be the most important electoral topics for themselves.
