The same criteria apply to Ukraine as to all other candidates, the Hungarian European Commissioner said.
The process of preparing Ukraine for the start of negotiations on accession to the European Union may take more than a year or two. This was stated by European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Vargei in a commentary in the German edition of Welt.
He noted that even if Kyiv manages to enter into negotiations before the end of 2023, they will not be completed within a year.
“Given the large amount of work required to prepare for participation in the EU internal market and many other important policy areas, full preparations for accession are likely to take longer than a year or two ,” said Vargei.
In this regard, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Olga Stefanishyna, said in a commentary to the publication that Ukraine has already started the integration process even before it received the status of a candidate for membership.
“A large number of reforms have already been carried out under the supervision of the EU. Therefore, it is possible to act more quickly and not to use the standard procedure,” he said.
However, Vargei does not include an accelerated procedure for Ukraine.
“The same criteria apply to Ukraine as to all other applicants,” he said.
At the same time, the EU sees Ukrainian aspirations positively.
“Ukraine is working hard to speed up the reforms and speed up the work required for it. This is positive. But not all seven reforms can be completed quickly,” Vargei said, adding that a timetable for starting the negotiations cannot be determined.
It will be remembered that President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he has no doubt that within two to three years Ukraine will receive membership in the European Union.
In the EU, this desire was called “optimistic, energetic and resolute.”
