Chinese President Xi Jinping told German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that he opposes the use of nuclear weapons in Europe.
Bloomberg believes that Xi Jinping’s statement was his most direct statement about the need to keep Russia’s war in Ukraine from escalating.
During the two leaders’ first face-to-face talks in Beijing on Friday, Xi Jinping called on the international community to “eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons and oppose nuclear war in order to ‘prevent a crisis’ on the Eurasian continent.”
The Chinese leader also noted the general need to ensure the stability of food and energy supply chains, disrupted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The agency writes that “Xi Jinping’s comments send a clear signal to Putin that nuclear threats are a red line for China, and indicate a commonality to a certain extent in the positions of Beijing and Brussels.”
The German Chancellor called on China to influence Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
China is a big country and is responsible for world peace,” Scholz emphasized at talks in Beijing with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang.
The chancellor noted that Beijing and Berlin share the opinion that Russian rhetoric about nuclear weapons is unacceptable. The German chancellor also dismissed criticism of his visit to China, saying “it is good and right that I am in Beijing now.”
Recall that China does not directly condemn the Russian attack on Ukraine, while increasing bilateral trade with it against the backdrop of Western sanctions.
