Finland applied to join the North Atlantic Alliance on May 18, 2022. Sweden took a similar step.
Finland may allow NATO to deploy nuclear weapons on Russia’s border if the country’s application to join the Alliance is approved. On Sunday, October 30, Newsweek writes about Finnish journalism.
“Talking to the press, defense sector sources said that Finnish Foreign and Defense Ministers Pekka Haavisto and Antti Kaikkonen made ‘commitments’ to NATO in July that they would not seek ‘ restrictions or national reservations’ if Helsinki’s bid is accepted,” the statement said.
The publication notes that this statement implies that NATO’s nuclear weapons will pass through Finland’s territory or be based on it.
At the same time, there is no official confirmation of the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons on Finland’s borders with the Russian Federation.
Both Finland and Sweden are known to have applied to join NATO in May in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Recall that the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO has already been approved by 28 member countries of the Alliance out of 30 (except Turkey and Hungary).
It should be noted that Finland and Sweden discussed NATO membership with Turkey.
