The family of Santiago Sanchez Cogedor, a Spaniard who went on foot to FIFA World Cup in Qatarmissing in Iran, told EFE on Thursday that he has been detained by Iranian authorities and is in good health.
Information provided to the family Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spainconfirmed by diplomatic sources.
Oslo-based Kurdish-Iranian opposition group Hengau Human Rights Organization said on its website that Sanchez was arrested “about three weeks ago” Iranian Ministry of Intelligence along with an Iranian citizen who, according to this page, acted as his interpreter.
According to the group, the Spanish adventurer was allegedly detained Iranian authorities after visiting a grave in Iranian Kurdistan Mahsa Aminia young woman who died a month and a half ago after being arrested for improperly wearing a veil.
Embassy of Spain in Iran requested that Spanish diplomatic personnel visit him “as soon as possible” and begin steps for his release, his sister Natalia told EFE, who assured him that there were no charges against him and that he had only crossed the country on foot from Qatar to compete in the World Cup.
