The German company became the third major manufacturer of passenger cars, which was forced to sell its assets in Russia.
The German concern Mercedes-Benz has completed a deal to sell a plant in the Moscow region. Currently, there is a possibility that instead of German cars, the plant will start producing Chinese ones. This was reported by the Russian edition of Kommersant.
Mercedes is the third major car manufacturer to leave Russia. In the past, Renault and Nissan sold their assets and left the Russian market.
The concern sold its plant near Moscow, as well as property to a dealer of the Avtodom Group of Companies. The concern estimates its assets in the Russian Federation at 2 billion euros. The media believe that in the current situation, the company will have problems withdrawing funds from the Russian Federation.
The ban on the supply of cars over 50 thousand euros from the EU and all cars from the US to the Russian Federation and other restrictions make it impossible to supply stable parts to the Russian Federation.
The Mercedes-Benz plant with a capacity of 25,000 vehicles per year was launched in Esipovo in 2019. Investments in the project amounted to 19 billion rubles.
In 2021, the Mercedes-Benz concern increased sales in Russia by 11%, to 43,000 vehicles. According to the results of the nine months of this year, they decreased by 73%, to 9.1 thousand units.
Motorhome specializes in the sale and maintenance of premium and luxury cars. The holding belongs to Andrey Olkhovsky.
Avtodom has previously announced active negotiations with a number of Chinese automakers regarding the exclusive distribution of new brands in Russia.
Note that automaker Toyota has stopped making cars at its plant in St. Petersburg due to the inability to “continue normal activities.”
