Zelensky thanked Germany for providing the modern IRIS-T air defense system, while Steinmeier confirmed the new deliveries.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met in Kyiv with the Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier. This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian leader on the evening of Tuesday, October 25.
“We discussed the whole range of threats – the continuation of missile terror, the involvement of Iran as an accomplice of Russia and the next manifestations of Russian nuclear blackmail. We equally consider these and similar that Russia is a threat to Germany,” Zelensky said at a briefing after talks with the German president.
He also called Germany’s contribution to Ukraine’s movement towards peace and the restoration of the country’s territorial integrity “heavy and significant”.
“I thanked Germany for providing the modern IRIS-T air defense system. It has shown itself very well in protecting our skies. It is a priority, we all feel it. I hope we can get some more relevant systems in the near future,” said Zelensky.
In this regard, Steinmeier announced the delivery of two additional MARS multiple launch rocket systems and four Panzerhaubitze 2000 howitzers to Ukraine, and also assured that the supply of air defense systems would continue.
Speaking about the ways to find peace in Ukraine, he told Zelensky: “I agree with you that a just peace is needed. The peace that Vladimir Putin wants can cause a new war.”
Also, the presidents of Ukraine and Germany approved a joint statement, in which, among other things, they agreed to patronize relations between the cities and communities of the two countries.
“Today, for the first time in the history of our bilateral relations, we approved the joint statement of the presidents. Among other things, it ensures the personal patronage of President Steinmeier in the process of restoration of the Chernihiv region. We agreed to cooperate at the local level, which is especially important in the context of our decentralization. The Ukrainian-German municipal partnership network will receive presidential patronage,” Zelensky said.
Recall that Steinmeier’s visit was supposed to take place on October 20, but then the German President canceled it for security reasons.
After that, Zelensky had a “substantive and productive” phone conversation with Steinmeier.
