The ultras of Kyiv “Dynamo” have calmed down. It was far from the moment of the accident when they looked at the stadium and held the stands. There is a handful left in the basement of their pub in front of the Dynamo stadium. Small scattered groups of big hands, tattooed and bearded, their eyes no longer fixed on televised games but on phone screens where real-time news comes from the front. Noise gave way to whispers. Absences are everywhere here. Many fight in the territorial defense, army or even in the Azov regiment. In 2014, the ultras would form the embryo of what was then just a battalion, and Azov has remained their favorite haunt ever since. Other absences will remain like that: more than a dozen deaths since February 24, only for “Dynamo” ultras. In the club, these men may sacrifice teeth or flawless skin.
