Poland aims to toughen punishment for espionage

Poland borrowed elements of the bill from the practice of France, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, and Estonia.

Poland’s Sejm will soon consider a bill that proposes to tighten the penalty for espionage in favor of a foreign state. This was reported by Euractiv.

The document proposes to increase the maximum liability for espionage from the current 10 to 25 years. If the project is supported, it will be the most severe punishment provided by Polish criminal law, other than life imprisonment.

“In the face of current threats and challenges, we need new solutions, and this requires quick action. Espionage poses an existential threat to any state, and therefore the punishment for it must be extremely harsh, ” said Deputy Minister of Justice Marcin Warhol.

For “accidental espionage” can also be imprisoned for three months to five years. And for the purposeful collection of information in favor of foreign intelligence and management of an agent network, one can face eight years in prison, in exceptional cases – life imprisonment.

Poland borrowed elements of the bill from the practice of France, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, and Estonia.

It will be remembered that Poland expelled 40 Russian diplomats for espionage.

It has also been reported that Belarusians and a Russian suspected of espionage are being held in Poland.
