The European Union used to depend on Russian gas by 40%, but now this figure has dropped to 7%, Thierry Breton said.
The European Union has achieved energy independence from Russia. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services Thierry Breton, RTL reports.
He noted that the EU used to depend on the Russian Federation, but now the member states of the European Union have completely removed this dependence.
“Now we are completely separated from Russian gas. No one thought we could do this, because we depend on Russia. We depended on 40%, and now it’s only 7%,” he stressed.
According to him, at the beginning of a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, it is predicted that the European Union will not achieve energy independence from the Russian Federation until 2027.
The European Commissioner added that Russia is no longer a reliable partner. Europe managed to replace 155 billion cubic meters. m of gas from other sources, although its cost has increased.
Note that the price of gas in Europe is falling after the decision of the EU countries on measures to overcome the consequences of the energy crisis.
