According to open data, journalists have identified 7,822 Russian soldiers who died in Ukraine. Before this, the head of the RF Ministry of Defense Shoigu announced only about 5937 dead military personnel.
Independent journalists and researchers have confirmed by name the identity of 7,822 Russians killed throughout Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Such data presented in a joint project of Mediazona publications and the BBC’s Russian service on Saturday, October 22.
Since the beginning of the general war, journalists have been tracking information about the dead Russian servicemen based on open data – according to the posts of relatives on social networks, news in regional media and reports from local authorities. “This number does not reflect the true level of losses: we only see public reports of deaths. In addition, the number of missing and captured is unknown,” the authors of the students are emphasizing.

Since February 24, Russian authorities have reported three times the number of Russian soldiers killed in the war. On March 2 and 25, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation gave the numbers of 498 and 1351 people, respectively. After that, they stopped disclosing the data until the speech of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu on September 21 in connection with the announcement of the mobilization. Then he said that the losses of the Russian army amounted to 5937 people killed.
“This is a lie: even according to our open source count, many more died at that time – which means that in fact these numbers are in the tens of thousands,” the authors note of learning.
Most of the deaths confirmed by researchers were in the Krasnodar Territory – 329 people. Among the leaders in terms of the number of deaths are two national republics: Buryatia, where 302 deaths are reliably known, and Dagestan – 321 deaths. “In general, the reports of the deaths of soldiers come from poor regions: their average salary is below the median in Russia,” the researchers said.
On October 21, the deaths of more than 1,200 officers of the Russian army and other power structures were confirmed, including two deputy army commanders – Major General Andrei Sukhovetsky from the 41st Army and Major General Vladimir Frolov from the 8th Army .
In addition, 86 deaths of military pilots are known. “Pilot losses are especially painful for the army: the training of a front-line aviation pilot of the first class takes 7-8 years and costs about 3.4 million dollars,” the authors of study notes. According to them, the Russian armed forces also suffered huge losses in the troops, which are considered elite and most ready for battle: the airborne forces, marines and special forces.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the total combat losses of the Russians since the beginning of the mass invasion of Ukraine, on the morning of October 22, amounted to more than 67 thousand people.
