The Congress of the Communist Party of China approved the sole supreme leadership of Xi Jinping and re-elected him for a third term.
In Beijing on Saturday, October 22, the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China concluded its work. At today’s meeting, changes were made to the CPC charter, approving the sole supreme leadership of the party and state of China’s current leader, Xi Jinping, Reuters reported.
It should be noted that two changes were made to the Communist Party charter, the purpose of which was to strengthen the status of General Secretary Xi Jinping in the party. The First Amendment established Xi Jinping’s “status as the core of the CPC Central Committee and the whole Party,” and his vision of “socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era” became a guide for action for all of the party member.
The Second Amendment obliges party members to defend “the position of general secretary Xi Jinping as the “core” of the CCP” and “defend the leadership of the party.”
With these changes, Xi Jinping is effectively equated with CPC leaders Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, giving the current leader unprecedented power in the last 50 years of Chinese history.
At the meeting, the Communist Party also elected members of the party’s Central Committee, which will approve the country’s leadership for the next five years. The Central Committee includes 205 people. On October 23, they will elect the composition of the Politburo of the Central Committee and the Standing Committee of the Politburo – the highest decision-making body in China. The General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee will also be elected.
The list of new members of the Central Committee does not include the four current members of the Politburo Standing Committee: Li Keqiang, Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang and Han Zheng. Thus, they could not enter the new Politburo and once again occupy the most important positions in the government. Apparently, Chinese President Xi Jinping has decided to update the ruling board of the Central Committee and bring more people from his team, writes the South China Morning Post.
Additionally, at the closing ceremony of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party, former Chinese leader Hu Jintao was ushered out of the hall. Why this happened is not known. This moment was not shown on the television broadcast of the closing ceremony of the congress in China.
It will be recalled that in Beijing on Sunday, October 16, the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China began, which will summarize the results of the party’s activities in the past five years and the main directions of the party’s activities and the country for the next five years will be described.
