The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a huge impact on children. According to an annual survey by a Dutch NGO, lack of food or medicine has led to the death of about 286,000 children under the age of five.

The KidsRights index annually ranks 185 countries based on data-driven compliance with the International Convention on the Rights of the Child UN.

Iceland, Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands lead the 2022 classification, followed by the Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Chad.

Children are forced to work

For the first time in two decades, the number of child laborers has risen to 160 million, according to the KidsRights Index, an increase of 8.4 million over the past four years.

However, the study notes the progress made by some countries, such as Bolivia which nearly halved child labor accidents, or Angola, which cut the under-five death rate by more than half.

Swisswhich was second last year, dropped to 31st “due to the country’s lack of application of the principle of the “best interests of children” in decisions that affect them,” the NGO said in a statement.

Nigeria ranks 175th for the highest rate of maternal deaths during childbirth. (AFP)
