So far, the island nation has launched a scheme for deprivation of citizenship against eight billionaires from the Russian Federation and their families.
Four Russian billionaires and their relatives will be deprived of Cypriot citizenship. This was reported on April 21 by the Phileleftheros newspaper.
It was noted that the “gold passports” issued in exchange for investments will be taken from Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska, president of the group of companies Mercury Igor Kesaev, owner Komsomolskaya Pravda and RBC media holding Grigory Berezkin, Alisher Usmanov’s sister Gulbahor Ismailova, as well as 11 dependents.
The reason for this decision of the Cypriot authorities was the inclusion of these people in the lists of European Union sanctions due to the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
As the publication recalls, Deripaska received Cypriot citizenship in 2017, Ismailova – in 2015, Berezkin and Kasaev – in 2012.
Earlier, the Cypriot government launched a citizenship deprivation scheme against four other billionaires from Russia and 17 members of their families. According to the newspaper, these are Mikhail Gutseriev, Alexander Ponomarenko, Vadim Moshkovich and Alexei Kuzmichev.
In early April, Reuters reported that 2,886 Russians used the Cypriot investment program to obtain “gold passports”.
Cypriot authorities are now investigating about 1,100 people for war -related violations in Ukraine.
Recall that in October 2020, Cyprus suspended the citizenship-for-investment program due to multiple violations.
Thus, it became known that the “golden passport” of the Cypriot was illegally received by 3,500 relatives of investors in the economy of the island state.
