Progressive ex-president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and far-right Jair Bolsonaro, who is seeking re-election, will take part this Sunday, October 16, in the first organized debate before the second round of the Brazilian presidential election.
The meetings are eagerly awaited, as experts assure that both will seek to increase the opposition to each other through attacks that are already being seen in the campaigns and have been gaining momentum in recent days.
divided electorate
According to the latest survey published last Friday by the firm datafolia56% of Brazilians would not vote at all Bolsonaroand 46% would not vote Lula.
In this case, the former trade unionist and head of state will enter the debate alone, and he will have no other candidates to help fuel the flames of discussion.
From Bolsonaro Aggressive behavior is expected, very similar to the one he led a few days before the first round, when he showered derogatory adjectives on his main election rival.
In this sense, the progressive leader’s corruption and prison background will be themes that the head of state is expected to use in his strategy against the former president. In addition, it is noted that Bolsonaro will resort to fuzzy data to sow doubt among citizens who have not yet decided on their vote.
Relatively LulaAnalysts say he will maintain his active stance and try to defend his flags in the fight against hunger and poverty, although they also warn that he will counterattack any blows he receives from his adversary.
The issue of the political use of religion by the far-right leader and some of the corruption scandals involving him and his family is likely to be raised by the former trade unionist, as he did in his recent speeches.
Trends
The first-round voting trend continues in second-round polls, which credit Lula with 49%, compared to 44% for the far right.
In the first round of the presidential elections, the progressive leader received 48.4% of the vote, compared to 43.2% for Bolsonaro, and since neither of them got more than half, they will have to decide in the October 30 vote. (EFE)
