almost a hundred refugees were found naked on the border between Greece and Turkey after being forced to cross Evros river what divides both countries, the Greek Minister of Civil Protection said this Sunday, calling the incident “an inhumane scene.”
European border agency Frontex confirmed to AFP the “rescue of 92 migrants on Friday” with the support of Greek authorities, according to spokeswoman Paulina Bakula.
“Agents (Frontex) reported that the migrants were found naked and some with visible injuries,” he said from the organization’s headquarters in Warsaw. From Athens (the capital of Greece) they assure that the authorities of Ankara (the capital of Turkey) forced these people to undress before expelling them to the Greek side of the border.

Greece vs. Turkey
Greek Civil Defense Minister Takis Theodorikakos accused Turkey “instrumentalization of illegal immigration”, but Ankara denies any involvement in the degrading treatment of migrants.
In a series of tweets in Turkish, Greek and English, the Turkish President denied any responsibility and accused Greece “inhuman” behavior.
“We call on Greece to end its inhuman treatment of refugees as soon as possible in order to put an end to false and unfounded accusations against Turkey,” wrote Fahrettin Altun, head of communications under the Turkish President.
“With these ridiculous actions, Greece once again shows the world that it does not even respect the dignity of the oppressed people by publishing photographs of the refugees it deported after they were deprived of their property,” he added.
Greece must stop its “manipulation and dishonesty,” Turkish Deputy Interior Minister Ismail Çataklı said in an English-language tweet earlier.
The international community condemns the two countries
Most people, Syrians and Afghans, “told Frontex agents that three Turkish army vehicles took them to Evros,” Theodorikakos told Skai.
Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi called last Saturday’s incident “a disgrace to civilization.”
High Commissioner for United Nations for Refugees (Aknur) for his part denounced on Twitter the “cruel and degrading treatment” and called for “a full investigation into this incident.”
Athens is regularly accused by NGOs and various investigative journalism of forced illegal return to the maritime and land border with Turkey.
Mare Liberum assured this Sunday that “in the Evros region, crimes against human rights are systematic and committed daily by Turkey and Greece.”
