Many people keep old phones at home instead of recycling them.
A total of 5.3 billion mobile phones will end up in landfills this year. And by 2030, approximately 74 million tons of electronics and electrical engineering will be sent to landfill annually. Such a calculation was made by the participants of the international forum of waste electronics and electrical appliances (WEEE), on Friday, October 14, according to the Air Force.
It is noted that the WEEE forecast, developed on the basis of global sales statistics, clearly shows the enormous problem that “e-waste” causes in the environment.
The researchers found that people are reluctant to recycle their phones, which means that valuable metals – such as cobalt in batteries or copper in electrical cables – have to be mined again for new phones.
“Most people just don’t realize that each of these little things have a decent value on their own,” said WEEE CEO Pascal Leroy.
Today, there are a total of approximately 16 billion mobile phones worldwide. Moreover, in Europe, for example, almost every third device is not used for a long time.
Note that the export of smartphones costing less than 10 thousand rubles in Russia reached 2.7 million units in the first half of 2022. This figure is 56% less than the same period last year .
