The Mukachevo authorities decided to replace the eagle – the symbol of Hungary – with a trident in one of the castles, which did not please Budapest.
The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjarto, summoned Ukraine’s Chargé d’Affaires in connection with the Mukachevo City Council’s decision the previous day to dismantle the turul eagle from Palanok castle and replace it with a trident. On Friday, October 14, InfoRadio reports.
Szijjarto said that he considered the demolition of the statue in Mukachevo an unnecessary provocation, invited the Ukrainian ambassador to the Foreign Ministry, and also addressed the head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration, Viktor Nikita, whom he called “a wonderful person.”
“I’m sure he doesn’t realize it, his common sense, his fair approach is completely opposite to what is being done today at the level of provocation,” said the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry.
He added that it doesn’t matter who carried out the “provocation” to leave turul, because Hungary’s task now is to “stand up for the Hungarians of Transcarpathia.”
The previous day, the Mukachevo City Council ordered the local historical museum to dismantle the turul eagle from Palanok castle and replace it with a trident. In the first half of the 20th century, the turul was considered a national symbol in Hungary, and was especially popular among the followers of the idea of the so-called “Greater Hungary” within the borders for the conclusion of the Trianon Treaty following the results of the First World War.
It was previously reported that the European Parliament no longer considers Hungary a “full democracy”.
