The main point in the new document is to contain the danger from Russia. Also among the priorities is effective competition in China.
Containing the threat from Russia and “effective” competition with China have become top priorities of the new US National Security Strategy. The document was published on Wednesday, October 12, on the White House website.
“The gravest strategic challenge we face in striving for a free, open, prosperous and secure world comes from powers that combine authoritarian rule with a revisionist foreign policy,” the text said.

The White House said their behavior was a challenge to international peace and stability.
At the same time, the United States sees the difference between China and Russia.
“Russia poses a direct threat to a free and open international system, now recklessly trampling on the fundamental laws of the international order, as demonstrated by its brutal war of aggression against Ukraine. The PRC , on the other hand, is the only competitor that has both the intention to change the international order and the economic, diplomatic, military and technological power to achieve this goal,” said the text of the Strategy.
Based on this, the main objectives in the document are:
-
risk prevention from the Russian Federation;
-
“effective” competition in China;
-
bringing together the new statuses of China (the most serious geopolitical challenge) and the Russian Federation (an immediate threat to European security);
-
the possibility of “peaceful coexistence” with China and the recognition of its decisive contribution to the world economy are allowed;
-
in relations with the Russian Federation, it was decided to guide a pragmatic approach to relations in areas where it is mutually beneficial;
-
the desire to reduce the risks of unleashing nuclear war is indicated;
-
strengthening alliances and collaborations around the world.
“Some countries in the world are concerned about the competition between the United States and the world’s largest autocracy. We understand these concerns. We also want to avoid a world where competition increases with the hard bloc conflict. We are not looking for a new Cold War. Rather, we are trying to support every country, regardless of size or strength, in exercising freedom of choice,” the US presidential administration said.
It added that this is a critical difference between the US view of preserving the autonomy and rights of less powerful states, and the view of its rivals, which is not.
Earlier, the US State Department said they have a plan in case the Russian Federation uses nuclear weapons.
