The war unleashed by the Russian Federation is not only a war against Ukraine, but against the entire civilized world, von der Leyen believes.
Russia’s attempts to annex and annex Ukraine’s sovereign territories have raised the challenges of the international security system to a new level. The EU must continue to support Ukraine in countering Russian aggression. This is what European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, speaking to the EU diplomatic corps in Brussels on Wednesday, October 12.
“Putin seized Ukraine’s sovereign territories in an unconscionable act of aggression. He forced people to vote at gunpoint. He even threatened to use nuclear weapons if the Ukrainians returned their territories. This is a disturbing development not only for Russia’s neighbors. It is an attack against the entire UN Charter”, he said.
In his speech about the attempted illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories, Putin rhetorically asked who agreed to a rules-based world and when. In this regard, von der Leyen emphasized that Russia agreed to this when it signed the UN Charter, when it participated in the negotiations on the Helsinki Final Act.
According to him, Putin not only launched direct aggression against Ukraine, but also unleashed a global food war against the whole world. The EU is working to permanently solve this problem.
“Millions of people in the Middle East in North Africa are now facing the consequences of Putin’s war against Ukrainian crops. To solve this crisis, we have created “solidarity corridors” for exports of Ukrainian,” said Von der Leyen.
In addition, the EU has allocated 7.7 billion euros for investment in programs for the development of agriculture and food production until 2024.
“The problem of the war in Ukraine will be solved first with all the brave fighters of Ukraine in Kherson, and in Kharkov, and with the entire front line, but also by our global response to the Russian aggression,” concluded the EC President .
The President of the EC is sure that “even if Russian missiles fall again on Ukrainian cities, they will not destroy the Ukrainian spirit.” In particular, he gave an example of how Ukrainians sang, despite the shelling, in Kyiv’s metro stations.
He believes that the EU’s response to Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine surprised Moscow and the world. The first sanctions were adopted in the early days, and since then eight packages of personal and sectoral sanctions have been adopted.
“We gave Ukraine – and we did it with enthusiasm – the status of a candidate country (for accession to the EU – ed.). I think we can be proud of this. It shows how much our EU through unity and determination, ” emphasis the background. der Leyen.
Recall that von der Leyen on Wednesday, September 28, presented proposals for the eighth package of sanctions against Russia.
