The President of the United States called on governors to follow his example and grant pardons to those convicted of possession of marijuana under state laws.
US President Joe Biden announced a pardon for all those convicted under federal laws for possession of marijuana. We are only talking about those cases where the case of possession of marijuana is not accompanied by others. On Thursday, October 6, CNN reports.
The President directed the Attorney General of the United States to develop a procedure for issuing certificates and pardons to those convicted.

“I have issued pardons to anyone who has previously violated the federal possession-only marijuana law,” the president said, noting that thousands of people convicted of marijuana possession did not get of work, housing, or education because of it, and that it is time to end this injustice.
Biden also urged state governors to use their power to pardon more people who violate possession laws in states where marijuana is still illegal.
In addition, the US Department of Health ordered to review the inclusion of marijuana in the list of substances controlled by special services. Thus, it will not be included in the same classification that includes heroin and LSD.
At the same time, Biden emphasized that certain rules regarding marijuana will remain in place even after the drug is legalized.
“Even as federal and local marijuana regulations change, important restrictions on trade, marketing, and sales to minors must remain in place,” he said.
The pardon announced by Biden will affect approximately 6.5 thousand people who were convicted from 1992 to 2021 in a single case – the possession of marijuana.
