Russian chess legend Gary Kasparov explained on Monday what could lead to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ouster of his inner circle through a “palace coup.”
CNN reporter Paula Reed asked Putin, a longtime critic and political activist, if he expects anti-Kremlin sentiment to strengthen in Russia as his military aggression in Ukraine continues to decline.
“Finally yes,” replied Kasparov, a master of Soviet and Russian chess.
That is why Kasparov outlined a “sequence of movements that cannot be changed”.
“First of all, Russian society and the Russian elite must recognize that the war is over,” he said. “The bad news from Ukraine will inspire more people to prosper as economic poverty increases.”
“So, a military defeat in Ukraine, a socio-economic uprising, and then you will have the conditions, the right conditions for a coup,” Kasparov predicted. “Because many close circles of Putin are looking for a goat to oust and the dictator must always be responsible for all failures.”
Putin knew that losing the war in Ukraine was “not his option,” Kasparov said.
“It’s a question of political survival and in many cases … a question of physical survival,” he added. “So he has to prove he won the war.”
