The beginning of the school year is a defining moment. Mothers still introduce their children to Ukrainian education, even from abroad.
The head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Matti Maasikas, said that there is no common understanding in the European Union on whether to start integrating Ukrainian refugees, because it is not known how long the war will last. He said this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
“There is no pan-European policy on starting the integration of Ukrainian refugees. But I am fully convinced that the general situation in European societies and authorities is very hospitable to them. I will not list all kinds of assistance that are automatically Ukrainians are doing. Acceptable,” he said.
According to Maasikas, there is a general understanding that the war is ongoing and that the refugees, or most of them, cannot return.
“I don’t think that any of the EU member states have a policy to integrate these people faster, because their labor markets need it. The understanding of your situation remains very strong,” said of the ambassador.
As Maasikas noted, the main factor is the unpredictability of the situation.
“Most people want to return to Ukraine, and I want that, because Ukraine needs these people. Many have already returned,” he said.
According to the EU Ambassador, the start of the school year is a defining moment. Many Ukrainian mothers still introduce their children to Ukrainian education, even from abroad.
Maasikas also noted that Ukrainians are very hardworking.
“Wherever there are Ukrainian refugees (including my home country, Estonia, where they make up 4% of the population), they want to start working as soon as possible. Always the first generation of migrants, as a rule, do a step below their level of education. and qualification level, unfortunately, mainly due to language and cultural aspects, but many of them have found work,” said the ambassador.
It should be remembered that since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than eight million Ukrainians have left for the countries of the European Union, but about five million of them have returned home.
