They refused to vote for the Russian Federation because of its violation of Ukrainian airspace and the illegal confiscation of foreign aircraft.
Russia has failed to be re-elected to the governing board of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is part of the UN structure, Reuters reported on Saturday, October 1.

As the agency notes, Russia did not receive enough votes to remain on the ICAO board. He is re-elected every three years at the meeting, which is attended by representatives of the organization’s 193 member countries. According to the results of the elections, 36 states entered the council. As clarified by the Federal Air Transport Agency, Russia received 80 votes with 86 votes required for re-election.
Russia asked for a second vote
Following the October 2 election results, Russia requested an additional vote, but was denied, Reuters wrote. Assembly President Poppy Hoza called the situation “unprecedented.”
“We express regret over the results of the vote. We see it as a purely political move, which has nothing to do with Russia’s position in the field of civil aviation,” Reuters quoted a Russian representative at ICAO as saying.
“According to the rules of standing procedures for voting in the council, due to the non-election of the 11th member of the council, a re-voting is required. However, the Russian delegation rejected it. The Russian Federation retains the right to full membership in the international organization and will continue its work through the representation of Russia in ICAO, and also in relevant ICAO working groups,” the Federal Air Transport Agency said.
Among the reasons for refusing to vote for Russia, Reuters cited Russia’s violation of Ukraine’s airspace, including the bombing of airports, as well as the illegal confiscation of hundreds of foreign aircraft.
Recall that the Turkish airline Turkish Airlines has canceled flights to the Russian cities of Sochi, Rostov and Yekaterinburg, as well as to Belarusian Minsk until December 31, 2022.
Before this, the ICAO marked the Russian Federation with a “red flag” on the aviation safety audit page of 187 countries in the world.
