The US National Weather Service warned of a “catastrophic” storm surge and the possibility of tornadoes.
A hurricane hit Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday, September 28 Ian – one of the most powerful in the US in recent years. This was reported by Reuters.
The Category 4 storm was accompanied by sustained winds of up to 241 km/h and flooded sandy beaches and coastal towns. The water washed away cars and reached the roofs of houses.
Parts of central Florida are forecast to receive up to 76 cm of rain and widespread flooding. Nearly two million homes and businesses across the state were without power late Wednesday afternoon, according to utility data.
US border officials say a boat carrying Cuban migrants sank off the coast of Florida due to the storm, leaving 20 people missing.
“This is a storm that we will be talking about for years to come, a historic event,” National Weather Service director Ken Graham said in a statement.
Hurricane Ian slowly moved inland and with the onset of darkness weakened to category 2 with a maximum wind speed of 170 km / h.
It is noted that it will lose power as it crosses the Florida peninsula, and is expected to reach the Atlantic coast in the afternoon of September 29th.
