The military determined that a short-range ballistic missile was fired from North Pyongyang Province at 6:53 am local time. The rocket flew about 600 kilometers, reaching its peak about 60 kilometers at a top speed of Mach 5.
The agency said the launch coincided with the arrival of the US carrier strike group led by the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan at the South Korean port of Busan to participate in the first joint US-South Korean naval exercises in five years.
In addition to the aircraft carrier, the group included the missile cruiser Chancellorsville and the destroyer Barry. The American nuclear submarine Annapolis is also expected to take part in the exercises.
The exercises will take place off the east coast of South Korea later this month.
Remember, on August 17, North Korea conducted a test launch of two cruise missiles towards the Yellow Sea.
