The release of Ukrainian fighters who defended Mariupol took place through Turkish President Erdogan.
Five commanders of the Azov regiment, who were released from Russian captivity on Wednesday, September 21, will remain in Turkey until the end of the war. This was said by President Volodymyr Zelensky in a conversation with defenders.
“These are the terms of the exchange. In Turkey, they are under the personal protectorate of the Turkish president and in comfortable conditions. They will also be able to hold personal meetings,” said the head of state.
He also commented on the transfer to the Russian side of the former People’s Deputy, the head of the Opposition Platform for Life, Viktor Medvedchuk.
“We were ready to exchange Medvedchuk for at least one defender of Azovstal, but it turned out to return how many people. This is a reason for the whole country to drink,” said Zelensky.
In turn, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on the air of a local TV channel that the exchange of prisoners between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, achieved through the mediation of Ankara, “is an important step towards ending of war.”
Recall that during the large-scale exchange of prisoners of war, 215 Ukrainian defenders returned home. At the same time, 55 conquerors and Medvedchuk were handed over to the Russian side.
