Under article 140 of the German Penal Code, conduct is punishable, understood as public approval of aggressive wars and capable of disrupting public order.

Police and prosecutors of several German federal states have initiated more than 140 investigations into cases related to support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This was reported by the German edition of ZEIT.

These cases relate to the period from February 24 – the date of the start of a comprehensive Russian war against Ukraine, most of them involving the use of symbols – the Z sign, which the Russian army marks of military equipment. In some federal states, including Lower Saxony, Bavaria and Berlin, the public use of such a symbol, for example in demonstrations, is a criminal offense.

In particular, 19 such cases were opened in Saxony-Anhalt, 17 in Hamburg (16 in the use of the Z sign), in North Rhine-Westphalia-37 cases (22 in the Z sign). It was noted that in Bavaria, although they do not maintain such statistics, they still take measures against supporters of the Russian war.

According to article 140 of the German Penal Code, conduct is punishable, understood as public approval of aggressive wars and capable of disrupting public order. The penalty is a fine or imprisonment of up to three years for those who “encourage or otherwise … approve in public, at a meeting, or by disseminating written materials” of unlawful acts.

Recall, according to one of the assumptions, the Z symbol was stolen from the police: it was reported that the Z was the symbol of the fourth SS motorized police division, which participated in World War II and lasted until 1945.
