The US government is developing a mechanism for transferring Russian funds to Kyiv to compensate for the damage.

The US Department of Justice has asked the US Congress for permission to use confiscated Russian assets to support Ukraine. This was during the hearing of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, said the head of the working group of the Department of Justice on the application of sanctions against Russia, Andrew Adams on Tuesday, September 20.

“This measure would allow the Department of Justice, the Treasury and the state to work together to return funds to the US government to repair the damage caused by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” he said.

Granting these powers requires changes in some laws governing the use of confiscated funds, the politician added.

Recall that the Canadian Senate approved a bill by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau authorizing the confiscation of Russian assets.

The EU has begun preparing legislation on the confiscation of assets of the Russian Federation. The European Parliament has already approved the relevant directive. In October, it must be approved by the EU Council.
