The information about the “export of Ukrainian wheat for other purposes” is Russian propaganda, the official said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is spreading misinformation that Ukrainian grain is allegedly being exported for other purposes. This was announced on Tuesday, September 20, by EU High Representative Josep Borrell in New York during a press conference following the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers, which traditionally takes place before the start of the UN General Assembly.
“We must continue the fight against Russian propaganda and its false narratives. I want to give you some facts. The UN Grain Agreement and our efforts to implement the “solidarity lines” have already brought down prices of food around the world. Most Ukrainian grain exports are sent to countries in need of the country. Look at the data, statistics. Two-thirds of Ukrainian exports are delivered to Africa, the Middle East and Asia. That’s why , it is not true that Putin said that the grain exported from Ukraine will not reach the people in need,” he stressed.
The European official also noted that this situation would not exist if Russia had not blocked the export of food to Ukraine and had not bombed Ukraine’s agricultural infrastructure.
According to him, the EU has allocated 7.7 billion euros by 2024 for the most urgent needs to address the issue of world hunger. This amount of aid is more than anything Russia has tried to do or promised to these countries.
“Decisions must be made in immediate reality, in the days and months to come. In some countries, and Somalia is a good example, the UN must declare a state of emergency … No one but the UN and the EU has done more to combat this huge problem” said Borrell.
He also emphasized that there are only two causes of the world’s food problems: climate change and Russia’s blockade of Ukraine’s ports.
Recall that the previous President of Russia Vladimir Putin said that Ukrainian grain was not given to the poorest countries, as planned. He accused Ukraine of violating the deal and announced the need to change its terms.
The President’s Office denied Putin’s allegations, explaining them as a new attempt to blackmail the West into easing sanctions.
