U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, representing the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively, introduced a bill on Wednesday under which Russia State Sponsor of Terrorism. This was requested by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky himself.
The proposal comes months after members of the Senate Judiciary Committee urged the Biden administration to do so, The Hill reports.
The bipartisan duo aims to transform Russia fifth addition to the American list state sponsors of terrorismjoining North Korea, Iran, Syria and Cuba.
According to a statement released jointly by Graham and Blumenthal, this status would remove Russia’s sovereign immunity from US courts and reduce foreign aid and exports to the country.
The bill follows a resolution passed by the Senate in late July that called for Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to introduce the inclusion of Russia on the list.
“If, after all this,[Russian President Vladimir]Putin’s regime is not a state that supports terrorism, then this definition is meaningless,” Graham said in the letter.
“The events of recent days and weeks have shown more than ever that Russia should be recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism,” Blumenthal said.
US President Joe Biden previously rejected the measure because he believes it could have “undesirable consequences” for Americans themselves.
The Kremlin, for its part, welcomed the US President’s rejection of the Senate resolution, believing that the very discussion of this issue was “monstrous” in itself.
The United States announced another economic aid to Ukraine
The United States will provide Ukraine with a new batch of $675 million in military aid, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said last week at the start of a meeting with representatives of 50 allied nations at the US base in Ramstein, Germany.
The party will include rockets, artillery ammunition and armored vehicles, he said at a meeting on increasing military aid to Ukraine.
Austin assured that the successes of the international community’s efforts in support of Ukraine were beginning to “reverberate” at the front, and felt that it was necessary to “promote” new aid in order to defeat Russia.
At the end of August, the government of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a new 500 million euro military aid package for Ukraine.
