Guterres admitted that the UN could facilitate a large-scale prisoner exchange between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on Ukraine and Russia to carry out a large-scale exchange of prisoners of war in an “all for all” format. It was reported by RIA Novosti.
“The exchange of prisoners is a positive thing. It reduces the suffering of the prisoners themselves, the suffering of their families. The position I expressed is that the ideal is to exchange “all for all” to eliminate this drama in the lives of so many people,” he said.
At the same time, Guterres admitted that the UN could facilitate a large-scale exchange of prisoners.
“Normally we do not participate in the exchange of prisoners – this is the prerogative of the ICRC. Of course, we want Russia and Ukraine to reach the widest possible agreement on this matter,” said the UN Secretary General.
Recall that in the occupied Yelenovka, Donetsk region, in the colony where Ukrainian prisoners of war are kept, on the eve of the expected visit of the UN mission, living conditions have improved.
Earlier, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky compared the exchange funds of Ukraine and Russia. At the beginning of the general invasion, Russia captured more prisoners of war than Ukraine, he said.
