Kyiv’s military support must remain unwavering – despite the approaching winter, the admiral said.
Western military aid and the actions of the Ukrainian military played a decisive role in the success of Kyiv’s recent counterattacks. This opinion was expressed by the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee (MC) Admiral Rob Bauer at the MC conference in the Estonian capital.
“Ammunition, equipment and training provided by allies and other nations make a real difference on the battlefield,” Bauer said.
According to the admiral, during the two-day conference they discussed how to “sustain and expand” assistance to Kyiv from alliance partners.
“NATO will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary. Winter will come, but the support must remain unwavering,” assured Rob Bauer.
“Unusual decisions of the Ukrainian military”
“With its successes in the conflict zone … Ukraine has fundamentally changed modern military affairs,” the admiral added, pointing to close cooperation between military and civilian forces.
The chairman of the committee noted that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have a very creative approach to using the weapon systems provided to them.
“They (the Ukrainian military – Ed.) used them in a non-standard way,” he admitted.
Prime Minister of Estonia: We must focus on increasing arms supplies
In this regard, the Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas expressed confidence that the amount of weapons supplied to Kyiv should not be reduced.
“The ongoing counter-offensive proves that military aid brings Ukraine closer to victory and peace. We must focus on increasing the amount of aid and arms supplies to face the Russian aggression as soon as possible,” insisted Callas.
NATO Military Committee Conference
The military committee meets twice a year for meetings of the heads of the defense departments at the headquarters of NATO in Brussels, once a year the conference is held in one of the countries of the alliance. One of the main tasks of this year’s format is the implementation of the decisions agreed at the NATO summit in Madrid.
The heads of the Ministries of Defense of Finland and Sweden, Antti Kaikkonen and Peter Hultkvist, took part in the conference as invited guests for the first time this year.
Recommendations for the North Atlantic Council
The Forum provides consensus-based military advice to the North Atlantic Council on how to respond to global security challenges.
The meeting in Estonia also addressed issues related to the training of NATO instructors of the armed forces in Iraq (NATO Mission Iraq, NMI) and the work of the International Force under the leadership of the alliance (KFOR), which is responsible for ensuring security in Kosovo.
The work of the military committee is provided by the permanent military representatives of the countries at NATO headquarters. It is made up of the chiefs of staff of the alliance’s 30 member countries.
