Western publications note that the Ukrainian side has made progress in acquiring fighters and air defense.
Ukraine made progress in negotiations with the United States regarding the supply of F-16 fighter jets, Patriot air defense systems and Gray Eagle UAVs. This was reported by Politico, citing its sources.
“Behind the scenes, the search continues for weapons that could change the course of the war. In recent weeks, there has been a shift from loud calls for the supply of air defense systems and fighter jets to quiet negotiations,” the report said.
The publication’s interlocutors noted that the discussion of the Patriot issue is currently at an early stage in the US Department of Defense, but the final decision will be made by President Joseph Biden.
But the fact that officials are talking about such a possibility is a big change from this spring when they dismissed the idea.
However, the material states that one of the obstacles to a positive decision on the Patriot is the relative lack of these air defense systems.
However, the Pentagon awarded a $182 million contract to Raytheon Technologies to develop the NASAMS mobile air defense system. The first two systems should be delivered within the next two months.
“If the plan goes ahead, it is likely that the US will sign a contract with Raytheon to develop additional systems for Kyiv, instead of transferring Patriot batteries from US stockpiles,” the sources added.
