On the eve of Beijing held military exercises off the coast of Taiwan. The maneuvers included ballistic missile launches, simulated sea and air attacks in the air and waters around Taiwan.
The Chinese leadership has ordered its army to prepare for the scenario of taking Taiwan by force in 2027. This was announced on Friday, September 16, by the Deputy head of the CIA, David Cohen, wrote CNN reporter Ana Cabrera.
“Chinese President Xi Jinping has told his military that he wants China to take control of Taiwan by force by 2027,” the correspondent wrote.
At the same time, Cohen mentioned that currently, the intelligence of the United States does not believe that the PRC authorities have made a final decision on the potential invasion of Taiwan.
Earlier, the US announced a $1.1 billion arms shipment to Taipei. The package includes 60 Harpoon anti-ship missiles and 100 Sidewinder missiles. The State Department said such supplies serve only defense purposes and do not violate the “one China” principle. In response, the Chinese Ministry of Defense demanded that the agreement be revoked and all military engagements with the island cease. Later, China decided to impose sanctions against top managers of American defense companies Raytheon Technologies and Boeing Defense.
At the end of August, it became known that Taiwan’s government will increase its defense budget by almost 14% next year against the backdrop of China’s military activity. By 2026, Taiwanese authorities intend to install anti-drone systems across the island. For these purposes, they plan to allocate more than 4.3 billion Taiwan dollars (141 million US dollars).
The situation around Taiwan escalated as a result of the visit to Taipei by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi on August 2. Beijing considered this trip as a violation of the principle of “one China” and as an attempt to interfere in internal affairs.
Earlier, Taiwan’s President said China was waging a “cognitive war” against Taiwan, terrorizing the island nation’s population.
