The Committee of Ministers became interested in Ukraine’s proposal to create a special tribunal to consider crimes of aggression against Ukraine and an international compensation mechanism.
The Council of Europe wants to hold Russia accountable for the war in Ukraine. The decision necessary for this was taken by the Committee of Ministers of the Council, reports the press service of the Council of Europe.
“The Committee stresses the need to ensure a comprehensive system of accountability for serious violations of international law resulting from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in order to prevent impunity and prevent further violations,” the decision said.
It also confirms the need for a decisive and clear international legal response to the aggression against Ukraine, which will not allow impunity for serious violations of international law, emphasizing that the legal responsibility of those responsible for such violations is very important.
The Committee notes with interest Ukraine’s proposals for the establishment of a special court to deal with crimes of aggression against Ukraine and a comprehensive international compensation mechanism, including, as a first step, an international registry of disappearances .
The member states of the Council of Europe welcomed the continued efforts, in cooperation with Ukraine, to ensure accountability for the crime of aggression against Ukraine and to ensure full compensation for damage or injury caused by violations of Russia on international law in Ukraine.
It was previously reported that the Council of Europe condemned the Russian Federation for violating human rights in Crimea.
Recall that in mid-March Russia was expelled from the Council of Europe, and on June 7 the State Duma adopted two bills that allow not to execute decisions of the European Court of Human Rights in the country.
