The draft law contains provisions for a presidential term of seven years without the right to subsequent re-election. Also, the country’s capital will once again be renamed to Astana.

The amendments were adopted in a joint session of the parliament’s chambers after consideration of two readings simultaneously.
50 members of the Senate and 99 representatives of the Majilis unanimously voted “for”.
Minister of Justice Kanat Musin presented the amendments to the Constitution at the meeting.
“The draft law contains provisions for a presidential term of seven years without the right to subsequent re-election,” Musin said.
He also added that the amendments contain a rule on changing the name of the country’s capital Nur-Sultan to Astana.
“The issue of renaming the capital has been discussed by society for a long time, therefore, taking into account public opinion, this proposal is included in the draft law,” said the minister.
According to the regulations, the law adopted today by the parliament was sent for signature to the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. He must sign the document within a month.
It will be remembered that on September 1, Tokayev proposed to hold snap elections for the head of state in Kazakhstan this fall. He announced his willingness to go to early elections, despite reducing the president’s own term of office.
