A significant portion of the population supports Finland’s accession to NATO, the process needs to be accelerated, the minister said.
Finnish Minister for European Affairs Tytti Tyuppurainen called it “likely” to join NATO, Sky News wrote on Friday, April 15th.
“Right now, I’d say it’s more than likely, but the decision hasn’t been made yet,” he said.
At the same time, according to him, “the people of Finland have already made their choice,” and public opinion polls show significant public support for the idea of the country’s membership in NATO.
According to Tyuppurainen, the application process needs to be expedited.
The minister added that profound changes have now taken place in relations between Finland and Russia. He called the war Moscow unleashed on Ukraine “brutal” and a “wake-up call” for the whole world.
He also commented on Russia’s threats related to the possibility of Finland and Sweden joining NATO.
“Whatever Russia says, we hear it, of course, but we make our own decisions based on our interests and our conditions, our consideration of the overall situation,” Tyuppurainen said.
Earlier, NATO Secretary -General Jens Stoltenberg said Finland and Sweden could rely on NATO membership under an accelerated procedure.
The Federation Council of the Russian Federation said Finland’s possible entry into NATO would make it a target for Russia’s retaliatory measures.
