An agreement on a ceasefire in Azerbaijan since the evening of September 14 was reached with the participation of the international community, the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia said. Baku has yet to comment on Yerevan’s allegations.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have reached an agreement on a truce, the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan said on the evening of Thursday, September 15. However, according to him, no document or agreement is being prepared for signing with Baku.
“Thanks to the participation of the international community, it was possible to reach an agreement on a truce from 20:00 on September 14. We hope that Azerbaijan will adhere to this agreement,” Grigoryan said on the air of Public Television.
Azerbaijan has not yet received confirmation of this information. The press secretary of the Armenian Ministry of Defense, Aram Torosyan, wrote on Facebook that as of 20.00 local time, the fire almost stopped in all directions, no significant incidents were recorded.
Protests in Yerevan demanding Pashinyan’s resignation
On the evening of September 14, several thousand people blocked the central Baghramyan Avenue in Yerevan near the parliament building, demanding the resignation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The reason for the protests was Pashinyan’s statement about the readiness of the authorities to sign a certain document in Azerbaijan, which, according to him, could provoke criticism from many Armenian citizens. According to media reports, many considered the words of the head of government, uttered during a speech in parliament, as a rejection of the claims of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
Pashinyan later said on his Facebook page that he would not be signing any documents. “Dear compatriots, I urge you, I ask you not to give in to manipulation. No document has been signed and is not being prepared for signing. This is an information sabotage, led by unfriendly external forces to destroy the safety of the country , ” asserted the head of the Armenian Cabinet.
The National Security Service of Armenia stated that the prime minister’s words were distorted and “manipulatively presented by various media”.
New escalation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan
The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan escalated again on the night of September 13. According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, Azerbaijan launched shelling in the direction of the border settlements of Vardenis, Sotk, Artanish, Ishkhanasar, Goris and Kapan. Baku accused Yerevan of “massive sabotage” on the border in the direction of Dashkesan, Kalbajar and Lachin. “As a result of urgent measures taken by our units to immediately prevent these actions, a battle broke out,” the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said, adding that “necessary measures” were taken to ” silence the firing points of the Armenian armed forces and prevent the expansion of the scale of the military conflict.”
According to Pashinyan, more than 100 Armenian soldiers were killed in two days as a result of clashes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Azerbaijan announced 50 military casualties for its part.
