Municipal representatives from 18 districts of Moscow and St. Petersburg signed a public statement calling for the resignation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
With Ukraine’s successful counter-offensive in the Kharkiv region of Russia, somehow someone suddenly became more active in the fight against the dictatorial regime. Last week, representatives from two local self-government bodies of the Russian Federation – in Moscow and St. Petersburg – issued official statements calling for the resignation of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. And on September 12 they were joined by colleagues from other districts. Observers consider the statement of the representatives as a sensation for modern Russia.
Essence of statements
It all started with the fact that representatives of the municipality of Smolninskoye in St. Petersburg appealed to the State Duma saying that Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine harms the security of the Russian state and its citizens. And the next day, representatives of the Moscow municipal district of Lomonosovsky published on the district site an appeal to the Russian dictator himself, urging him to resign.
The representatives noted that, starting with Putin’s second term, “everything went haywire”: the GDP did not double, the minimum wage did not rise to the declared numbers, smart and hardworking people were leaving Russia plural, and there is no promised stability.
“We, the municipal deputies of Russia, believe that the actions of President VV Putin are harmful to the future of Russia and its citizens. We demand the resignation of Vladimir Putin from the position of President of the Russian Federation!” said the statement.

Reaction
Meanwhile, the representatives of the citizens of St. Petersburg from the Smolninsky district soon after the publication of their statement received a call to the police, where protocols were made against them for discrediting the Russian army.
“The risks for the signatories of such statements are enormous,” commented Andrey Kolesnikov, an employee of the American analytical center Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “And this is further evidence of the irritation and fatigue of people who are dissatisfied with Putin.”
It is noteworthy that the deputies published their manifestos at the last moment of their tenure – on the eve of local elections in the Russian Federation, held on September 9-11. However, the status of the people’s representatives gave this event a resonance, he emphasized. If such a statement was made by a group of ordinary citizens, almost no one would know about it.
