This will allow Ukraine to profit and give the EU access to an additional source of affordable electricity.
The European Commission called on EU countries to actively purchase electricity from Ukraine, as it is in the interest of both Ukraine and the European Union. This was announced on Friday, September 9, by European Commissioner Kadri Simson at a press conference following the results of the EU Extraordinary Council of Ministers on Energy in Brussels, reports Ukrinform.
“We must continue to support our Ukrainian friends by increasing electricity trade with them. This is mutually beneficial – will allow Ukraine to earn and give the EU access to an additional source of affordable electricity ,” said Samson.
“I encourage the ministers to strengthen the electricity trade in Ukraine. As we said today, the time has come to complement our preparations (for the crisis – ed.) with measures to reduce price pressure, to make good use of the profits that will come out of the market for the benefit of our citizens,” he added.
The European Commissioner recalled the five proposals of the European Commission, submitted today for consideration by European officials to overcome the energy crisis and pass the winter season.
Among them, in particular, energy saving measures and mandatory measures to reduce its consumption during peak loads, market instruments to balance the excess profits of companies of energy and losses of energy consumers at very high prices on the energy market, diversification of energy supplies on the European market, the establishment of marginal prices for the purchase of Russian energy resources, in particular gas, as well as the further development of a joint EU platform for the coordinated purchase of gas and its price reduction.
Earlier it was reported that the European Commission plans to introduce a cap on electricity prices.
