The appearance of the Russian Federation on the list of state sponsors of terrorism would mean the imposition of sanctions against any country that continues to conduct normal economic cooperation with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on US President Joe Biden to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. On Friday, April 15, the Washington Post wrote, citing the words of an unnamed senior official.
According to the publication, the Ukrainian president’s appeal came in a recent telephone conversation with an American colleague.
“Zelensky officially requested that US authorities legally recognize Russia as a sponsor of state terrorism. Such a decision would automatically increase sanctions and economic pressure on the Kremlin,” the newspaper wrote.
At the same time, Biden did not guarantee or promise to take such a step, but he assured that he was considering various ways to increase pressure on Russia.
The publication states that a positive US decision could have several consequences, including:
-
the imposition of economic sanctions on dozens of other countries that continue to do business with Russia,
-
freezing of Moscow’s assets in the States, including real estate,
-
prohibition on various exports of dual-use goods.
The authors of the article emphasize that the American authorities did not dare to include the USSR in this list even during the Cold War.
Zelensky believes Russia could use nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
