Minesweeper Lt. Dimitrie Nicolescu tried to defuse a drifting projectile, but it ran aground during a storm.
A dredger of the Romanian Navy encountered a drifting mine in the Black Sea, which they were trying to remove in bad weather. This was reported by Reuters on September 9, citing the country’s Ministry of Defense.
It is known that the minesweeper Lt. Dimitrie Nicolescu was alerted to a mine drifting about 25 nautical miles northeast of the Romanian port of Constanta, but the ship was unable to clear it before the projectile struck due to strong winds and waves.
“There were no victims or injuries as a result of the explosion, the ship’s 75 servicemen were not in danger, the ship’s buoyancy was not disturbed, and there was no serious damage on board,” the Romanian Defense Ministry said.
Reuters recalled that the mines in the Black Sea appeared after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24. Since the start of the war, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine have destroyed 28 mines in their waters.
Earlier, Odessa OVA reported that up to 600 mines of Russian aggressors were located in the exclusive maritime zone of Ukraine. Periodically they break anchors and drift adrift of their own accord.
