Ukrainian fighters fight in old Soviet ways, using different tactics, says Yuriy Ignat
Ukraine has developed a unique air defense (AD) system – unlike anywhere else in the world. This is what the speaker of the command of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yuriy Ignat said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, published on Friday, September 9.
“We have really created a unique air defense system, which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. We are fighting in old Soviet ways, using different tactics. We have created a warning system. complexes that must also respond and intercept missiles. There are visual observation posts,” he commented on the creation of the so-called anti-missile “umbrella” like in the United States or Israel.
However, the military notes that Ukraine still has work to do. In particular, it is necessary to strengthen the current system in the Western modern way.
“What needs to be done? Strengthen our air defense system with new modern methods that will enter service with us. These are, in particular, NASAMS and IRIS-T. But, unfortunately, the amount that they plan to transfer to us so far is not enough. Although this is the first step is when the partners give us Western-style heavy air defense systems,” explained Ignat.
According to him, NASAMS already has many countries in their arsenal. While IRIS-T is a new complex.
“And since we already have a decision from the government of Norway and the United States on the supply of these systems, we can hope that other countries will be able to provide them to us,” he summarized.
The IRIS-T is a short-range air-to-air missile equipped with a cooled infrared homing head.
NASAMS is a mobile Norwegian anti-aircraft missile system designed to engage maneuvering aerodynamic targets at low and medium altitudes.
As you know, Ukraine’s air defense drops from 50 to 70 percent of Russian missiles.
Recall that one of the Ukrainian rocket batteries Buk M1 destroyed a Russian aircraft without firing a single shot.
