SALADO, Texas (AP) – Nearly two dozen people were injured when tornadoes hit central Texas as part of the hurricane system expected to cause more traffic and destructive winds on Wednesday.
The storm caused Extensive Damage Tuesday in Salado, about 50 miles north of Austin. Bell County Judge David Blackburn said 23 people were injured, one of them in critical condition. Blackburn said 12 of the injured were taken to hospital.
“There’s not much left,” said Blackburn, the nation’s top official. “Large trees are uprooted, upside down and stripped. The buildings actually turned into ruins. … Power lines, power poles, are scattered everywhere. This fact must be taken into account ”.
Photos taken on social media showed a grapefruit-sized hailstorm associated with this storm.
Mauer County Sheriff Steve Sandwick said dispatchers began receiving calls from residents trapped in damaged homes shortly after the tornado warning siren sounded at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. No serious injuries were reported. The meteorological crew assessed the damage in the region on Wednesday.
More tornadoes are expected Wednesday in the south-central and Mississippi River valleys, the hurricane forecasting center said.
According to the weather forecast, hurricanes, strong tornadoes and powerful hurricanes are possible in Arkansas, Illinois, Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, Mississippi, Indiana, Louisiana and Alabama. Little Rock, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee were among the cities with the worst weather on Wednesday, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
The snowstorm warning released by the National Weather Service remained in effect until Thursday in most parts of western and central North Dakota where 2 feet (60 cm) of snow is expected.
