The Russians want the reactors to be disconnected from the Ukrainian grid and connected to the Russian one, but Ukraine does not agree with these statements, the president said.
Ukraine will not consider a controlled shutdown of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant to prevent the release of radiation, as the plant supplies electricity to two regions of Ukraine. The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said this in an interview with ABC news.
“I know that the Russians want the reactors to be disconnected from the Ukrainian network and connected to the Russian one. No, we do not agree with these statements,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky emphasized that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, captured by Russian troops, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe with six units.
“It means six Chernobyls, it means that the biggest danger in Europe, it is nuclear weapons,” he emphasized.
Zelensky emphasized the need to de-occupy the station.
“There shouldn’t be military personnel. There shouldn’t be military equipment on the territory. And there shouldn’t be nuclear plant workers… surrounded by people with guns,” the president said.
Recall that Russian troops fired at Energodar from mortars and machine guns. The enemy also used helicopters.
The Russians are storing ammunition at the nuclear power plant itself, which if exploded, could lead to a nuclear disaster worse than Chernobyl.
In addition, Energoatom reported that on Saturday night, power unit No. 5 were killed at Zaporizhzhya NPP due to continuous shelling of Russian military lines of communication.
