The British department believes that the main task of the Russian invaders is the complete capture of the Donetsk region.
Russia’s main goal in Ukraine remains an offensive operation in Donbass. This was reported by the British Ministry of Defense on its Twitter account on Monday, August 5.
The department said that Avdiivka near Donetsk and the area 60 km to the north around Bakhmut remain the main direction of the offensive in Donbass.
“Although Russia has made the most progress in this sector, its forces are advancing only about 1 km per week in the direction of Bakhmut,” the report said.
British intelligence reported that the political goal of the Russian Federation’s military actions remains the capture of the entire Donetsk region. This will allow the Kremlin to announce the “liberation” of Donbass.
However, Russian forces have repeatedly missed deadlines to achieve this goal.
Ukrainian authorities say Russian forces are now ordered to complete this mission by September 15, 2022.
“It is unlikely that the forces will achieve this, which will further complicate Russia’s plans to hold referendums on the issue of joining the occupied territories to the Russian Federation,” the defense ministry concluded.
