Charles Michel said that “not a single day can be lost”, but the meeting of EU energy ministers will only take place on September 9.
The European Commission can’t wait for Ursula von der Leyen to speak on September 14 to propose a solution to the energy crisis. This was announced on Saturday, September 3, by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in an interview with several European media outlets, reports Politico.
“There is no day to lose,” said Michel.
He emphasized that it is important for the EU to resolve the issue of price restrictions.
“This is not new, we are not starting this debate today. That is why we have invited the Commission several times to set concrete proposals to help the Member States make a decision,” Michel was quoted as saying.
Von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said on Friday that he was “strongly convinced” of the need to limit the price of Russian gas exported through the pipeline to the EU.
“The setting of gas prices can be proposed at the European level,” he said.
The commission expressed its opinion in a draft document obtained by Politico. He called for price caps on electricity from sources other than gas and reallocation of funds from highly profitable energy producers to soften the blow to consumers.
Energy ministers from across the bloc are due to meet on September 9 for an emergency summit.
Earlier it was reported that the European Union plans to introduce a limit on gas prices in the Russian Federation.
