Taiwan reported downed today drone unidentified civilian on one of the islands under its sovereignty, which is a few kilometers from the coast Chinalocal news agency reported CNA.
The ship was seen shortly after noon this Thursday in the waters of Lion Island, a small island belonging to Kinmen County, also known as Kuemoy, which is controlled by Taiwanwhich is located just 4 kilometers from Xiamen city in southeastern Fujian province.
The unit in charge of Kinmen’s defense said in a statement that the device was shot down after warning flares aimed at scaring it away failed.
This event takes place after the President TaiwanTsai Ing-wen on Tuesday urged the island’s military to take “strong countermeasures” against Chinese drone incursions in order to “protect Taiwan’s airspace.”
Chinese drone incursions have increased in recent times after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi paid a fleeting visit to Taiwan that sparked outrage. China and sparked tensions between Washington and Beijing, which called the trip a “farce” and a “deplorable betrayal”.
A Chinese drone photo of two visibly confused Taiwanese soldiers at an observation post in the Kinmen Islands went viral last week on both sides of the Strait.
Despite the apparently short distance at which the photo of the soldiers was taken, the island’s Ministry of Defense assured that the Chinese device did not intrude into Taiwanese airspace, after some voices in Taiwan questioned the military’s ability to allow an incursion.
Taiwan announces increase in defense spending
Faced with criticism, the Taiwanese military released its drone detection recommendations on Tuesday: “Fire flares, report intrusion, drive them out and shoot them down.”
Similarly, the army said it was working on an anti-drone system that would be ready next year in the aforementioned Kinmen Islands.
Tsai recently announced a 14% increase in defense spending next year in the face of what she describes as “an increase in Beijing’s military coercion.”
China responded to Pelosi’s trip with trade sanctions on the island and military exercises around Taiwan, which Taipei called a “blockade.”
Last Sunday, two US Navy warships entered the international waters of the Taiwan Strait, causing Beijing to accuse the US of “deliberately undermining peace and stability in the region.”
China insists on “reunification” of the People’s Republic of China with the island, which has been ruled autonomously since the Kuomintang (KMT) nationalists withdrew there in 1949 after losing the civil war against the Communists and continued the Republic of China regime, culminating in the transition to democracy in 1990 -s yrs.
