The fall in bread production in Ukraine from January to July 2022 reached 15-20%, said the first vice-president of the All-Ukrainian Association of Bakers.
The number of bread buyers in Ukraine for six months decreased by 2-3 million, while the decrease in bread production during this period reached 15-20%. Yuriy Duchenko, First Vice President of the All-Ukrainian Association of Bakers (VAP) and director of Kyiv Khleb LLC (TM Kyivkhlib), said such data, which indirectly indicate population changes, in an interview with Interfax- Ukraine.
“Within seven months, the decrease in production reached approximately 15-20%, depending on the region. In the east, this number is higher than in the west. In the west, there are figures of 100% and 105% of the previous period. This is mainly due to the migration of the population, the cessation and destruction of businesses and the decrease in the purchasing power of the population. Today, according to my estimates, the number of bread buyers has decreased by about 2-3 million,” said the agency’s interlocutor.
It is reported that since the beginning of the war, approximately 20% of bakeries have stopped working due to fighting, occupation or destruction of production facilities. An additional concern among bakers is the possible increase in natural gas prices this fall, which will force up to 10% of businesses to close, and the rest will increase product prices.
Remember that in the liberated regions of the Kiev region, bread was distributed free of charge.
